I have a '99 Dakota and have had trouble with a rather loud spark knock since the car was new. I was told it was the gas I was using, however the engine has been decarbonized and I've been using only the recommended brand of gas, but still having the problem.
Has anyone else had this trouble?

I've read an article that mentioned a head-cooling system induced knock that was remedied by going to a cooler thermostat. It noted that changing gas didn't help. The article was on the Dakota V-6.

I have a 99 Dakota 4x4 extra cab....I have a problem when I'm on the interstate. If I try to hold my speed at say 70 mph,and i start going up a hill the trans.starts going in and out of gear like it can't make up its mind and starts jerking.does anyone else have this problem?

I'll take a stab at it. First off your in overdrive. All you have to do is turn it off..The button is at the end of your shifter which is on your steering column. I would just leave it in 4th gear. It is also better for your transmission because of the heat that is generated by shifting in and out of O/D..When you get back onto a more "flat" surface turn O/D back on..Hope this helps.

I just wanted to let veryone know. I had my first oil change on Friday at my local Dodge Dealership. Their has been a recall issued for the 4.7 w Auto Tranny. Recall #890. They will shorten your auto tranny overflow tube. I just thought I would let everyone know about it.
#179 of 182 IMPY2 - I need your help!!! Spark knock issue

I have a '99 Dakota V6 and I am having exactly the same spark knock issue that you had. Has your issue been resolved (such that you are no longer having to use premium gas)?
I have been getting the run around from my dealer for months. I thought it was because I'm a girl, but apparently they do it to everyone.
Per Spike50's recommendation (Post#178), I asked them to research the cooler thermostat option. They said, "we have nothing from Chrysler on that..."
Any suggestions?

Ask the dealer about the timing being retarded back 4 degrees it seems like this subject was brought up in the past. Can't remember where.
This may help...

(sullivtm) I beleive I have read about a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) that spoke of a batch of bad sensors that got installed which can cause spark knock on the V6 (and some V8s too)
From fading, fuzzy memory..... I think it was the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) which needed to be replaced. I am, however, pretty sure it was one of the sensors on the INTAKE side of the engine. (MAP/MAF sensor? [Mass Air Flow/Manifold Absolute Pressure])
Have you looked through the listof TSBs for your truck? Here is the URL;
