| Are you currently in NC or just for vacations in the mtns. I lived in Boone for 6 years during school and am now in hot sticky Charlotte and missing the most enjoyable summers up there. I have 2000 Tacoma TRD with the V6 and love it. It is great to take up to the mtns and did excellent on some of the winter offroad excursions I took it on. I hope to take it out on Carolina Beach next weekend and see how it does in the sand. I used to have a blast jumping my 88 pickup down there. It just killed me to listen to it squeak after taking it in the Salt water though. | |

I'm planning on buying my first truck by the end of this year or early 2001. I've seen some impressive models. Like the 2001 nissan, new styling and supercharger and the 2001 Ranger (the edge). Does anyone know what Toyota will be doing to the 2001 Tacoma? Are there any bold changes or upgrades? I know there'll be a crew cab version but what about the V-6 extra-cab 4x4? When ever I mention to people I want to purchase a Toyota Tacoma, their eyes light up. Is a Toyota worth the extra $$$ compared to the Ranger. |

surf: Nah not hammered, just informed properly... tacoam: Well by your name you may have decided, but. . . Take a look at the 2001 Ranger with the OHC 4.0. It's speed, if that is what your after, is going to be in excess of the Tacoma as it has more HP (15 more) and more torque (15-20more). Current 4.0 has more torque but less hp. I am sure there are sites out there for Tacoma but http://www.edmunds.com when you go look under the specific vehicle gives you a "whats new" section. But, go look under the used vehicles you are considering. Compare Tacoma and Ranger and look at the Ranger ratings from Edmunds vs the Tacoma ratings. Ranger exceeds Tacoma in many areas, Tacoma is something like .2-.6 (on a scale of 1-10) higher in reliability. If that is worth an extra 3-5 grand to you, then go get the Tacoma. But also consider you get slightly better mpg on Ranger, better crash test results, better interior, almost yearly picked by Consumer Reports as the Best Buy in small p/u, rated almost dead even with Tacoma in all areas reported by Consumer Reports owners and picked by Four Wheeler as it's "top 10 values" in small pickups for 1999. You should be able to get a Ranger XLT 4X4, loaded, with that new engine for right around 20K. You would have to option up a Tacoma to around 25K to get that kind of an equipped truck. Just my 2 cents, it is your money. I know vince and I are well satisfied with our Rangers. |

Any Ranger interested? Going with an 87 and 89, both a bit built up but unless your vanilla stock, you should be able to keep up. Hope to have my winch on and running before that trip. If interested, say so. Tacomas, if interested, you just gotta stay back with my sons 94 Toy. . .more dirt flys back than forward... |

There is no one best truck for everybody. You'll just have to decide which is the best value for you. Do your reasearch and test drive, test drive, test drive. Don't just buy a name, whether it's Ford or Toyota. A Mazda B-Series (Ranger clone) is a better value nine times out of ten if you decide a Ranger is your truck. Toyota's don't have the reliability that they used to back in the '80s and early '90s. They're still up there, but, IMHO, they're not worth the premium they charge. |

| Fords just can't compete with Toyota. I think that the 4x4 package on the Ranger is just a gimmick. It doesn't even come with a locker!! It's only got a limited slip rear end like the car it really is. LOL. Even Chevy offers a locking rear end. The Ranger's tires are puny and it's really a glorified 2x2 that's incapable of any REAL off road action in stock form. It's simply a car with a truck bed that can't compete with Toyota in quality or performance. It's got a nice 4x4 label though. LOL. Enjoy the label Ranger suckers!!!! | |
| mvig...No I'm a Florida native but my inlaws have a mountain home up near Boone in a small town called Fleetwood Falls. Gods country up there. We visit Boone often and sometimes I wish I'd done my undergraduate at ASU rather than Univ. of Miami. But I'll never give up the 3 years of graduate school at U of Florida. Fun, fun, fun. Go Gators! cpounsr...does the "new" engine for 2001 Ranger have a track record in any current Ford vehicle? What other changes and/or upgrades are in store for the 2001 Ranger? Is that post stating $20,000 for a Ranger XLT 4x4 for 2000 model year or 2001? | |
|
Ranger XLT, supercab, 4 door optioned, off road equipped, 4.0LSOHC V6, 5 sp manual, maybe not with every option. You can get the same vehicle, a 2000, here in Denver, minus the SOHC engine for maybe 18-18.5K Look, Rangers are worth a look but I would wait for the 4.0 SOHC suppose to be out Sep-Nov this year. |

| You keep talking about the coming 4x4 from Ford that will compete with the TRD. Now we have to wait until 2003? Get real!!!! Then you want us to believe that this imaginary truck will sell for $5,000 less? You're a dreamer cp. The current Ranger already only sells for about 4 or 5K less. How are they going to add features and have it sell for less than what they have now? Maybe they'll make the Ranger even more cheaply and lower in quality than now to do it. Maybe they can make more of the engine out of cheap plastic like their other cars. You keep repeating all of the changes Ford has made compared to Toyota too. With all those changes the Ranger still can't compete with the Tacoma. You said so yourself "It is to directly compete with the TRD". You have admitted that Ford has nothing to compete with the TRD Tacoma and won't have anything until 2003!!! I guess that's why the Tacoma hasn't changed much in the last few years. There's no need to because it's the standard everyone else is trying to match!! I'm Vince's evil double and I know what I'm talking about. Enjoy that cheap Ranger 4x4 label!! LOL. | |

| Did Vince wise up and buy a Tacoma? | |
