Looks we all are more than a little annoyed at our 3rd doors. I took my 98 C1500 Silverado in for this rattle (and several others I'd rather not bore you with). It seems like the dealer managed to get most of noise out of it. According to them they tightened the latch, lubed it, and aligned the door. Now it only makes noise on rough roads, which at this point, I'm willing to deal with. There are many other quality control issues with this truck. It was assembled in the plant in Canada. I'd like any feedback you all have on your third door, and also any other issues you have on build quality from the plant in Canada. You can email me directly at JGT74yahoo.com. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Unfortunately, I have been a culprit of all my
trucks (total of 8 since 1994) full size
Silverados being built in Oshawa Ontario Canada.
Everyone one has had major quality control
problems! Namely third door looseness, cruise
control inoperative, horn did not work from
factory, loose seat tracks, and the list goes
on and on and on!!!!!!!!!! My question to anyone
out there is can you specify at time of ordering
to specifically have your truck built in the USA
either in Fort Wayne IND or Janesville, WI?
Anywhere but Canada and Mexico! I'm listening
to anyone who could help clarify my question.

All you poor Chevy owners! I have a 99 Ford F150 with the third door (soon to be traded for a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab) and aside from the kids not closing it properly, it has worked perfectly. Chevy didn't bother to add a fourth door to their new Silverado - sounds like it was because it would have doubled their problems! Has it only been Chevy's third door y'all are having trouble with or are there problems with other manufacturers? The last thing I need on my new truck is things falling off or sqeaks and rattles.

No rattles. Nice and tight. I can attest.

I have a 98 Silverado with 3rd door-built in Arlington TX. It has 11000 miles on it. My rattle seems to be coming from the right rear passenger sealbelt retractor unit. The door did leak when new, but was rehung by the dealer with no further problems, yet. Surprisingly, though, I've not had any mechanical/electrical problems yet. Quite a contrast to the Chevy Camaro I owned 20 years ago. The domestic manufacturers have improved quality, but how can one expect a 5000lb truck to be as free of squeaks and rattles as a passenger car? trucks are built for work, rough roads, and towing -not just cruising down the road. If we could think back to the trucks our father drove 20-30 years ago, we
'd appreciate just how far the ride/quality of these vehicles has improved.
My 2 cents-JRM

I JUST BOUGHT A 99 SILVERADO W/THIRD DOOR. I GUESS I SHOULD BE LUCKY IN THE FACT THAT I WAITED UNTIL 99 TO BUY MINE. I NEVER KNEW THEY HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS. MINE WAS BUILT IN PONTIAC, MICHAGAN. THE ONLY RATTLE I'VE NOTICED WAS IN THE DASH RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I THINK IT MAY BE BEHIND THE SPEEDOMETER OR THAT GENERAL AREA, BUT ONLY I CAN HEAR IT. I'M TRYING TO PINPOINT IT BEFORE I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER TO TIGHTEN UP. MAYBE I CAN TIGHTEN IT MYSELF. OTHER THAN THAT, MY THIRD DOOR IS TIGHT AND SILENT, BUT I WILL KEEP AN EAR OPEN FOR IT.

If you go back to the beginning of the topic, I was one of the first to comment on my 1997 and two 1998 Chevy trucks I have owned with the faulty third door. Guess what, I got rid of all of them mainly because of this annoying rattle from the third door which dealers were unable to resolve.
There comes a point when you have to get rid of a vehicle in order to be happy driving it. So, I bought a 1999 Silverado Ext. Cab and have yet other, less annoying, complaints. The third door is not one of those problems so far thank god.I guess when I spend over $26,000 on a new vehicle, I expect near perfection. So far, Chevy has disappointed me!

I think some of the 3rd door noise maybe coming from where the rear passangers side seatbelt is mounted to the truck. It has a metal loop with a bolt going through it and when I move the seatbelt a bit it makes what I think is one of my rattles. Anyone else notice this? Also, if anyone has figured out anything that you can go through and tighten yourself to help stop the noise, let me know. I'm willing to do just about anything at this point. Thanks.

keep taking it back and back and back to any Chevy dealer until you get the problem resolved. If after three times back at the same dealership and you kept all your records, file a lemon law and contact NHSTA and they will help investigate your complaint. Hopefully, GM will buy back your truck and in my opinion, they should buy it back for your full purchase price since in my case, the creak and noise was there from the very beginning with 0 miles on the truck. However, GM does not really care about customer service and so one can only dream of it.
I did have one of my 4 trucks fixed with the third
door at a GM dealer and they re-aligned the hinges and entry and exit latches, etc. and greased everything up and the noise did go away. For how long, who knows? - I sold it soon after the noise was fixed.
