Welcome to Town Hall. We say holdback is 3% for the Honda. As the link says, don't focus on holdback in negotiating so much, but instead focus on your out the door cost. Steve, Host |

If you really want to determine a dealer's "true cost", you would need to take the invoice, deduct the 3% holdback and then figure that car's share of the dealer's overhead. I know people don't want to think about the Cost of Doing Business but these costs are staggering and really need to be considered. I agree with our HOST here. Instead of trying to figure out all of these costs, etc, concentrate on your total OTD costs. It'll be much easier that way. Good Luck! |

Thanks for the Welcome and the information. My out the door cost .... best offer so far is Honda Odyssey 2004 EX-L-RES (leather and DVD) is $27,769 OTD (includes Destination Charge) MSRP $29,990 + $490 (Dest Charge)= $30,480 Goal is $27,500 OTD Invoice: $26,980 $26,980.00 - 914.40 (3% of MSRP)3% Factory Holdbk __________ = $26,065.60 $26,065.60 + 781.97 (3% Profit above invoice) __________ =$26,847.57 $26,847.57 + 490.00 (Destination Charge) __________ =$27,337.57 ( rounding up to what I want out the door - which is $27,500.00) So, I believe I am in the ballpark for an OTD price of $27,500 Hope all is well Once again thanks for the input. |

| wouldnt you have to pay sales tax, which would make the out the door price higher than 27500?? | |

OTD means different things to different people. It's probably a better practice to state an OTD price plus tax since sales tax varies from state to state. Or at least say including tax at X%. Doc fees also vary widely, but they are a profit center for the dealer, so most of us tend to roll them into the OTD price while negotiating. Ditto ad fees, mop and glow packages, etc. Steve, Host |

I've been receiving price quotes from local dealers for an EX-L-RES and wanted to find out if the numbers look good to you folks. I requested online quotes from 6 dealers. So far only 4 of the six dealers have responded. I requested itemized costs, but only one did that. I also requested the OTD price (tax 5% and tags), telling them that I needed that so I could directly compare all quotes. Dealer 1) $29,345.77 He said this included his "Value package" which had mud flaps, pin stripes and other things I did not want. I told him give me a price without those, and he responded that they were included at "no charge". Dealer 2) $29,000 Dealer 3) $28,805 Dealer 4) $28,732. This dealer responded by email, and itemized the costs. When I checked them they had the tax at 5.2% when it should be 5%and the calculated amount was way to low. When I told him that, he corrected himself. The OTD price came to $29,288. When I got home there was a message from the sales manager who was unaware that I had a quote already from them. He came up with the $28,732 figure. Interesting how the same dealership came up with two different numbers. I have a few other quotes I'm waiting on and I plan on calling the sales manager where I originally test drove the vehicle. He said that he would beat any price quote I have. Does $28,732 sound good? It seems OK to me. Thanks for any input. |
