I hope you are aware that "Bait and Switch" is very specific and very illegal.

Years ago, I remember a store in L.A. got caught doing this. They would advertise a used car for well below the market value for similar cars.

They would do things such as mix up plug wires to make the car run poorly. Of course, prospective buyers would be turned off.

They would be told..." what did you expect for that price?" and would be encouraged to look at other cars that of course were more money and in better condition.

I would like to think this practice is long gone...perhaps not.

Big difference between this and making an honest mistake. That was my point.

Most dealerships make an honest living and treat their customers well.

The bait and switch is alive and well on the car lot.

Frankly, I think it's a bit disingenuous of you to suggest otherwise, especially since you're in a position to hear all the war stories.

I know you are very critical of the car business...I don't have a problem with that at all.

Of course, articles like that do a good job of painting the entire industry with the same broad brush...wouldn't you agree?

If you have read many of my posts in other forums I think you would realize that I dispise underhanded tactics. It gives all of us a black eye.

A lot of successful dealerships have been major contributors to their communties for years. These places depend on repeat and referral business for continued growth.

A great reputation is earned one satisfied customer at a time.

Moi? I love car dealers. They help pay my salary around here by enrolling in our dealer locator service!

I agree that most dealers are real assets to their community, not to mention all the employees they employ.

Town Hall & Edmunds is just trying to educate people how to recognize and deal with the bad apples.

So, anyone gotten a good deal on an Odyssey this weekend?

$500 below invoice on EXL-Navi and $750 on 7/100/$0 extended warranty in Los Angeles area. Didn't buy the car and went ahead and bought the Sienna...XLE LTD with Navi+RES for more. Dealer finally piss me off for $250 and I ended went to Toyoda dealer today and bought a more expensive one. When I was signing the docs, Honda dealer called and welling to give me the price above. I told her(sale) too late. In just 30 mins, her manager called and got really piss about I bought the Sienna. Oh, well...I told him if he agree to give me car at above price last night, I might get the car this morning but you just bought your car back at $250.
Anyway, both cars are great and we just like the newer model since 2005 Ody is around the corner.

I'm in the process of buying a EX with cloth. I have several internet quotes, my best being $24,595. I also have a dealer verbally agreeing to beat any price I get in writing plus adding all the sealants, etc. (big deal)But he's two hours away. I'm still trying to get a good price from my local dealer and would like to get the Honda extended warranty as well. What should I pay for this? I have no idea what they are going for on average. I don't want aftermarket warranty, I want the one from Honda. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the heads up. A Uncle of my wifes went to Wyoming to purchase a car to save on taxes (that's what I heard anyways). I guess I need to give him a call to find out what the scoop was.

That's a better deal for the car price than what I've been quoted (only one quote, but looking for more). I signed up for all the edmunds price quotes and so far only heard back from one. I would advise you to do the same, you might get more responses than I did. I also decided to go to the Honda site and apply for a quote on 14 different dealers around an hour drive from my home. Yeah... I hope my home doesn't turn into grand central station. Also, look for the walkout price. That will tell you everything you should be paying.

From reading the posts in this board I've found that between $850-900 for a 7yr/100k warranty is a good deal.

I'm looking around for a EX cloth as well. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

1. Demand dealers to Quote into the car price.
2. Demand for Out-the-door price. (set your price(otd) really low and work the way up)
3. Create a quick and short Excel spreadsheet for quick calculation.
It works for me.
