#28369 of 30574 Postponed Buying Due to Not recommended/Unreliable Rating
Nov 17, 2011 (1:19 pm)
After I read the ratings by Consumer Reports Magazine -- Dec. 2011 Issue -- Honda Odyssey Not Recommended -- based on survey of owners of the 2011 Odyssey, I decided to seriously reconsider. Do I really want to buy a vehicle that I know is Not Recommended due to Reliability Issues? I have had vehicles in the past that seemed to spend more time in the repair shop than on the road -- Not to mention ruined vacations, trips, when the vehicle suddenly decided to break-down -- There is never a good time for a vehicle to break-down -- It always seems to happen on the way to the airport, to a job interview, important appointment, etc.
Seriously looking at the Toyota Sienna FWD -- The Only Recommended Minivan by Consumer Reports.
For loyal Odyssey buyers, Consumer Reports recommends Not-buying the very first model of a re-designed vehicle. The Last model year of a vehicle tends to be the most reliable one -- since the manufacturer has had time to fix any defects/flaws.

To each their own. I too saw the CR mag and actually commented on it a few posts back here. As I said then, to me, the inside of the Odyssey was so much better than the Sienna, and the long term track record of Honda, and Odyssey is so good, that I'll risk a "not recommended" by a single magazine.
My guess is that the not recommended was based on the 2 recalls of the 2011. But it's not like those recalls were faulty brakes, faulty transmissions, or overheating engines... it was a power window issue and a windshield wiper issue. Not exactly show stoppers.. to me at least. Below is a summary of the recalls...
"Honda has announced that it is recalling approximately 2,800 2011 Honda Odyssey minivans over potentially faulty front side windows. Either the front driver or passenger window may come off its track and fall down into the door or cease to operate. In a worst-case scenario, the window may shatter and break, causing pieces of broken glass to fall into the passenger area. Honda will begin contacting owners on or about April 15, 2011. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicles to their dealership, where the window glass will be replaced free of charge.
This is actually the second recall for the 2011 Honda Odyssey. Two weeks ago, Honda recalled approximately 33,341 of the new minivans for a peculiar situation that could occur when the windshield wiper blade becomes frozen to the windshield in cold weather. If the windshield wipers are turned on in this situation, the internal wiper linkage could bend, causing the windshield wiper motor to become inoperative, and obviously hurting visibility in foul weather situations."
And keep in mind that is for the 2011s (first year of new design). I'll overlook those and take my chances with the 2012 I bought.

I am about to, but am very undecided between ex-l w/Res and garmin (as mounted as possible) and the touring.
So far the prices that I have are
EX-L w/RES $33500, Dealer fee $349, TT&L
Touring $37500, Dealer fee $349, TT&L
Still trying to justify $4000 for NAV. I did notice that zag.com has one dealer close to me that suddenly is getting close to these prices. 2 weeks ago no-one near me was close. I wonder if there is some special starting that we are not aware of.

your price EX-L w/RES $33500 is a decent price.
I was also shocked to know about CR ratings about Odyssey.
When we are all paying premium price because of the brand and reliability..but the same reliability is being down rated by reputable organisation...what option do we have.
At this point I'm not able to go back to Sienna( where infact I started with it). It is very difficult to imagine me owning the new Sienna..which looks like a mini bus for me.
We all could have got a better bargain price if not for the Japan's calamity.
Typically during this time of the year we get good deals. But the dealers don't have enough stock to discount their odysseys.

I don't think so. I am trying to get a great deal in Denver. So far I have quotes of 2012 Odyssey EX-L w/ Nav for 35900.
2012 Touring 39600 and the grand dame.....
2012 Touring Elite 40600. Is it worth it? I really like the blind spot indicator to help me as the headrest on the passenger side second row blinds me looking out the right rear window completely. I was excited for the tilting side rear mirrors but the tilting is only on the right side???? Booo.
Lastly, my fave dark cherry pearl only has beige interior. I prefer the truffle, much better for children!
Opinions? Comments? Is $40,600 really worth it and is that a great deal?

Those are great prices for the touring and elite models. The side mirrors will tilt down on either side, it depends on which side the mirror adjustor selector is on. I paid 39,199 for the touring in black with truffle and if I had the option of buying the elite for 1K more then I would've jumped on it.

You can buy a Hondacare warranty at cost via internet. I told my dealership that I can buy a 5/100K with 0 deduct for cost at 750 and told them the dealerships name. They looked it up and they ended up selling me the warranty at 751.
