| response to jalh on S and S in Bel Air. I've talked with the sales manager on 3-4 occasions and still get the same $700 under MSRP deal on an EX. Now my wife says she wants leather and RES perhaps. Guess what? S and S has 3 of them (2 silver and 1 gold). I was thinking of offering $1000 over invoice for any EX-RES no matter what color. Anyone have any luck with this "normal" negotiation tactic at any Honda dealer? It used to work all the time! | |

Navyair, I bought a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan in jan. 2002 using www.carbargains.com. Basically, you pay them $200.00 and they get you at least 5 quotes from area dealers and the dealers have to honor them. It takes the leg work away from you! I will definitely use it again for my next car. It took them 3 days to e-mail me my report and I ended up going to Bethesda for my Civic where I paid invoice for my Civic. In the report it gives you the name of the person who has submitted that quote to CarBargains plus any add-on costs such as processing fee (only $25.00 in MD), pinstripes, roof racks, etc. Rosenthal (the scum thieves that they are- and avoid their service dept. at all costs) wouldn't even agree to giving CarBargains a quote! It's worth the free time it gives you to not have to worry, negotiate, and headaches. Its only for the Washington/Northern VA/MD area. Hope this helps, Carrie |

If it's a basic EX, then that's more than $4,000 over MSRP. Like any big-ticket item sold under a negotiation process, the salesman was just looking to make sure he didn't "leave any money on the table". There are probably enough people who pay these inflated asking prices, or close enough to them, that the salepeople would be crazy to at least not throw it out there and see what happens. The key is to not be insulted; the salesperson will quickly learn that you are knowledgable if you just calmly tell him/her what are you willing to pay. I don't know where you come up with them "taking you for $7,000", unless you have calculated the dealer invoice on an EX to be $24,400. If this is the case, they are still entitled to make a profit on the sale, but like anything else, it's a supply and demand situation. As long as people are addicted, $5 for a pack of cigarettes that probably costs less than $.50 to manufacture isn't ridiculous either. So as long as people think an Odyssey is a good value at MSRP (or above), they will continue to buy them. Don't blame the dealers; they sell at "market value" which is established by the consumers. If you want to complain about dealers, complain about the sneaky tactics often done to enhance the margin, particularly mandatory add-ons sold at preposterous prices ($10 worth of Scotchguard, $5 door-edge guards, and $60 mudguards does not constitute a "protection package" worth $500). |

We just bought a 2002 EX from the internet dept at David McDavid Honda in Houston for 26,510. The salesperson told us they ship them all over the place and have people come in from as far away as Arkansas and Mississippi. Great experience. Only problem was that they couldn't(wouldn't)sell us a Honda Care warranty. We passed on their third party warranty. Anyone know a good place to get a Honda Care warranty? |

The price of $26.500 for the ex. was for a new one right off the lot. Got the same price quote from Rudolph Honda in El Paso,T.X. |

You could get Honda care 7/10000/0 for $865-875. from quite a few honda dealer. Here are a couple threads I found out. Tracy McCrystal 800-264-3275. Donna 1-877-476-4265 X 8011. |

I can sympathize with the folks out there trying to buy an Odyssey at MSRP. You'd think the dealers would be more than happy to take your order or at least be square with you. With that said; if you're in a hurry and refuse to pay dealer mark up and are not lucky enough to find one sitting on a lot out there, then I would have to recommend the Toyota Siena. Considering availability, the Siena was a very close second place in my book. Toyota will work off the invoice and offer a low APR. |

Baja-try checking in with as many dealers as possible. Offer MSRP on the LX if you're truly serious about buying it, and tell them your preferred color. You can find email addresses at Honda's website, which has a nifty search feature for locating dealers. Tight lines! |

Carrie, Appreciate the advice, but suspect it is an apples/oranges comparison. (Ourisman already quoted MSRP and order i with a wait...same deal available at 2 dealers much closer). Civics are being heavily discounted by lots of dealers (car dealer's previous post here said he gets 15X profit from Ody as he does from Civic). I might check with USAA buyers service though...good point on using the buyers service to check. Northern VA dealers seem to have lots of customers who will pay MSRP+ and even charge to get on the list to get one. Then they load up with processing fees (which are NOT required, btw). Right now, I'm really torn. I like the NAV feature, but will might go with another van to avoid the Honda dealers. I can add NAV and DVD on a less expensive van and still come in under the price of the ODY Nav. Thanks for your comments, Carrie. |
