Some of the "experts" will tell you to conceal the fact that you have a trade in and I think that's laughable.

Your trade is worth whatever it is worth. Springing it after the deal is done accomplishes nothing. Just causes more work for the salesperson.

Besides, we can usually smell a "hidden trade".

I've done it. Once I landed on a good price for the Ody I wanted, I told the guy to get me a quote on my trade in. I told him I didn't want to go to the dealership, just have him come by my house and drop off my new car to pick up the trade. He gave me a range at first, and I told him to give me a firm price. He did. I ended up at the dealership and negotiated another $400 out of the trade before signing the deal. He did come to my house to drop off the new car and pick up my trade in. I have 3 kids and I don't like to sit around at a dealership.

The dealer gave me 2K higher than what Car Max offered me. I've found Car Max to be a waste of time. I've taken 3 cars there over the years, all very clean low mile models 5 yrs or less, and they are 10-20% lower than what I've gotten on trade. I'm a savvy negotiator and know how to bottom line price on a new car and also trade, so it wasn't a case of them inflating the price of the new car to justify a higher trade in allowance. I see these posts about them paying top dollar, and maybe they do except for my vehicles!! It doesn't hurt to get an opinion. I bought an 07 Touring in Dec of 07, traded in an 03 Ody EXL w DVD. I've been monitoring this board ever since, it's a great place for information. Good luck!

I did this just yesterday. I simply told them I had a car I was trying to sell privately but if unsuccessful would consider trading it. They gave me their internet price and then simply tacked the trade-in value onto it after I went into the dealership. They will probably low-ball your trade in if you do this but you are still liable to end up with a good deal. I was offered 300 below invoice on any EX-L model but about 1k less than I would have liked on my trade. (I haven't bought yet but am getting close to pulling the trigger).

Got my 09 Odyssey EX-L Nav & RES by ritesh6

09 EX-L w/ RES and NAV in Chicago area, DuPage IL

I emailed 6 dealers in my area before the end of the month in January, hoping for some end of the month deals. I got 1 'call me back' reply, 1 'unbeliveable' price of $29715+TTL reply, and 3 reasonable quotes which were about $200 within each other, and 1 dealer did not respond. So I just dealt with the 3 that responded with reasonable quotes. I emailed them back to make sure they did have the exact type of Odyssey I wanted.

I was expecting the quotes to be above invoice (before the $1250 cash rebate), but they were $400 - $500 below. But at least now i had a starting point to deal. I gave one dealer a low ball offer of $31250+TTL but he thought that was crazy and told me to make a better offer. At this point, it occurred to me to look at the old posts in this forum from Jan '08 and Feb '08. What I discovered is that Honda increased their cash rebate on '08 Odyssey from $1000 in Jan '08 to $2000 in Feb '08. So since I was in no hurry to buy, I decided to take a gamble and wait for the Feb '09 incentives. Sure enough, Honda increased their incentive to $2250. I got emails from the dealers with their new quotes. I replied with a "I'll buy it today for $33750 OTD price". That price is $881 below invoice (before incentives). One dealer came back with $33874 and said that the van had splash guards and I would have to pay $130 for them. Another dealer said okay to my offer and the deal was done.

Beforehand, I applied for a loan at Capitiol One and got a 5.3% rate (after .1% Costco discount), and I took that in to the dealer. I was thinking AHFC would match or beat, but they couldn't. They tried their local bank connections and no one could beat it. I think that is why the visit to the dealer took longer than expected. But in the end I was happy.

Here's the break down:
$33,258 selling price
-$2250 cash incentive
+$2742 TTL
======
$33,750 OTD

Thanks to all to post here, these forums are an essential tool in the car buying process.

That's really good news to hear. I thought maybe Honda would give me a better deal on the trade-in since it is an 06 Ody. It does need new PAX tires and the miles are a little higher than average. Does Honda offer anything for customer loyalty?

We are just at a crossroad with what to do. Either de-pax or do the trade if we can get a good amt on the trade (we already have the OTD price from a dealership via internet). I think the next step is have a meeting with the dealership and see what they'd do with the trade-in. We don't have to buy a car, but if they make it worth it, we'll do it.

Honda City in Levittown. It was a struggle to push them down to that price. Tax rate here is 8.625%, so OTD was $34,443,.88.

Huntington Honda offered the next best price, $98 more, with no haggling (direct internet price via edmunds.com)..

Best of luck to you.

Could you please share the Dealer Name including the qutoe of 29715?
Did you contact them at all, or assume it was a bait and switch.

Honda on Grand in Elmhurst. I did not contact them because I assumed it was a bait and switch or some other ploy.

Honda of Lisle is where I bought my Ody.
