$699 Dealer fee? Stupid by middlefiddle

So,
We're looking at an EX and I asked for exactly what tax, tag, & FEES meant.

This dealer installs the protection package (cargo tray in the cargo well, wheel locks, and mud guards) $399 (Apparently $899 retail?)
Pinstripe $55
Dealer Fee $699

The way I see it, that's over $1100 of "padding" built in to the deal. I don't want pinstriping and I could care less about the "protection package"

When I asked specifically about the dealer fee, here's what they said:

"The dealer fee is to cover costs that the dealer incurs. This is like the destination charge and is a non-negotiable cost of doing business."

Am I crazy to think that is the most ridiculous statement?

How about SELLING CARS covers costs that the dealer incurs?

I guess I won't worry about it too much, but I will be negotiating that $699 off the price. Shooting for invoice minus the $2500 minus the $699. Wish me luck.

Any other ridiculous dealer fees out there?

The fee is sometimes called a "lot fee," "dock fee", "processing fee," or "dealer fee."

It is nothing more than a way to guarantee that there's some built in profit in the deal. Some states limit the amount dealers can charge. (See Maryland). Other states have no such limit. It's funny how it shows up at Saturn dealers' no-haggle pricing, effectively raising the price.

Bottom line is that it is absolutely negotiable. I have never paid it and have always told dealers that if they have to show it on the sales documents, they can just back it out of the price such that bottom line doesn't change. Never been really challenged on it.

It is all smoke and mirrors at the end of the day.

But you're aboslutely right. And wise consumers don't pay the inflated prices for those "add-on" window sticker items. One dealer told me how i got mud flaps, pinstriping, and floor mats for he $1000 he wanted to charge. When I asked why is he charging for the floor mats when the window sticker shows them as included, he was stumped.

Call it what you want, but accessory charges are another way of making up the money on the deal. In these markets and on these cars, IMO, I wouldn't pay a penny for "accessories." Buy them separately or online and save yourself some coin.

A lot of the Virginia dealerships charge $300+ for doc fees and add a $499 appearance package to the car. From what I can tell, it is mudguards, door trim, and wheel locks, and that awesome pinstriping. What a ripoff.

Thankfully the DC metro area has about 10 different dealers. The Maryland dealerships only have a $100 (or less) doc fee and no other dealer addons.

We'll be paying cash + no trade in. The deal we have is 08 EX-L R+N:
Invoice - $2500 - 2% holdback ($716) - $780 (i have no idea) = $28,419

OTD = $31,183

With these discounts, we're debating getting the Touring for only $2800 more.

Speaking of new promotions, I just saw a TV ad this morning by Gillman Houston & Ft. Bend. It went by really quick, but I think they're offering 0% APR on 2008 ODY and Pilots! Ironically, they've been a little slow in responding to my requests. That's why I made appt elsewhere. Will keep you posted.

I bet you are in GA or FL?

If you know about the fee, it's just easier to negotiate a price, taking that into account, and knowing they are going to add that fee on at the end...

It's just how they explain it with a straight face that gets me...

I've sent an email requesting quote on buying two cars together. Will let you know the result. You may also start to send inquires. See how it goes.

Yep. I'm in FL.

It cracks me up too.

That's basically what I decided to do. This salesperson seems "sold" on the idea that it was a "non-negotiable" item that would be charged. So, I'll pay it- but negotiated the buying price with that taken into account.

Right now I'm at
$24,399. The other costs involved are:
1.50 battery disposal fee
5.00 tire disposal fee
24.00 electronic filing fee
$599. for the dealer fee.

How's that look for a standard EX?

What should a tag transfer cost me?
I'm leasing so I won't have to worry about tax (except on the payment)- correct?

The car price looks a bit high.

If you are leasing or purchasing (without honda financing), which is what I am currently doing, you should be able to get the EX for around 24K (dest included). I have multiple quotes at 23900 (which is invoice, minus the $2500 dealer cash, minus the 2% holdaback) plus doc fees of around 150 or so (in NJ). Not sure if the deals are as good down South though.
