Replying to: sneezy2 (Aug 20, 2008 11:28 am) We live in SW Houston, too. Maybe we can talk about this. I'm tired of this, too - still don't understand why other states charge $1,000~1,500 less on the same car. |

Replying to: jgz (Aug 20, 2008 1:54 pm) wow, that's an awesome quote you got...hard to believe though. I got a quote of OTD 28300, also by phone, but I don't have email confirmation yet. however, they did offer to drive a vehicle out to me in SW Hou if I am truly interested. We'll see how tomorrow afternoon goes at Sterling McCall...

So, We're looking at an EX and I asked for exactly what tax, tag, & FEES meant. This dealer installs the protection package (cargo tray in the cargo well, wheel locks, and mud guards) $399 (Apparently $899 retail?) Pinstripe $55 Dealer Fee $699 The way I see it, that's over $1100 of "padding" built in to the deal. I don't want pinstriping and I could care less about the "protection package" When I asked specifically about the dealer fee, here's what they said: "The dealer fee is to cover costs that the dealer incurs. This is like the destination charge and is a non-negotiable cost of doing business." Am I crazy to think that is the most ridiculous statement? How about SELLING CARS covers costs that the dealer incurs? I guess I won't worry about it too much, but I will be negotiating that $699 off the price. Shooting for invoice minus the $2500 minus the $699. Wish me luck. Any other ridiculous dealer fees out there? |

Replying to: middlefiddle (Aug 21, 2008 4:33 am) It is nothing more than a way to guarantee that there's some built in profit in the deal. Some states limit the amount dealers can charge. (See Maryland). Other states have no such limit. It's funny how it shows up at Saturn dealers' no-haggle pricing, effectively raising the price. Bottom line is that it is absolutely negotiable. I have never paid it and have always told dealers that if they have to show it on the sales documents, they can just back it out of the price such that bottom line doesn't change. Never been really challenged on it. It is all smoke and mirrors at the end of the day. But you're aboslutely right. And wise consumers don't pay the inflated prices for those "add-on" window sticker items. One dealer told me how i got mud flaps, pinstriping, and floor mats for he $1000 he wanted to charge. When I asked why is he charging for the floor mats when the window sticker shows them as included, he was stumped. Call it what you want, but accessory charges are another way of making up the money on the deal. In these markets and on these cars, IMO, I wouldn't pay a penny for "accessories." Buy them separately or online and save yourself some coin. |
