If the damage is less then $750.00 the dealer, by law, does not have to disclose it. Also, our dealership has never, ever lost money on a car deal. We may break out of it at net cost but never less. After you factor in floor plan, prep and comissions, it's a loss.

I like how you say, "by my definition" as if I were making it up.

If you can get them to sell you a car at a true $600.00 loss or more (thats not factoring in any of the overhead and commissions), then you are indeed smarter then 99.9% of the shoppers out there.

Also, I guess you missed it but the guy (gal?) who claimed to get that AWESOME price did't get the car at that price. Read a few posts back. So I guess I am right.

I apologize, because, clearly, you misunderstood what I was writing when I wrote, "...,by your definition,...". I wanted to be clear that we were talking about hard costs, and not the soft costs such as debt service, prep, commissions, etc. I was in no way questioning the voracity of your numbers.

It still is not clear what you are saying about the damage disclosure. Is the definition of damage what the dealer was compensated by an insurance company or is the definition of damage how much the dealer spent (via PDR or other means) to repair the car?

I hope that you didn't purchase yet and used this bulletin to get an idea of market price. If you bought at invoice than sorry to say that you got ripped off and could've saved from 2,500-3,000 easily (I guess broker has to make some money). There's 2k rebates, 3% holdbacks, and low financing on top of that for this month.

EX-L should go for around 27,000 easily. I'm getting offers for 28,300 for EX-L RES debating to hold out to see if there are sweeter deals in July.

I do agree with writer about soft costs or soft profits, that the dealer may use the vehicle price as a loss leader, whilst gaining profit from financing, accessories, warranties, holdback, trade-in, and the mysterious doc fee. Sometimes the profit is for the dealer and not the salesperson. I did have a few dealers decline my price, b/c they said it was $xxx below their cost.

Personally, I don't see the reason to buy an extended warranty on a new Honda. It doesn't seem to be a good investment i.e., price of it, considering the odds of needing the warranty.

Hi, thanks for your info...in your response, you quoted 3% holdback...And that is what i thought it said on edmunds also a few months ago...but looking now on edmunds, under their definition of TMV there is a link to holdback for the manufacturers. But it says only 2%? If edmunds is wrong, then I ended up leaving money on the table with the dealer...and i would not be happy with edmunds.

Honda 2% of the Base MSRP

The total is 3%. Although the HTB is 2% of the MSRP before destination. Honda dealers get an additional 1% to cover fixed costs and dealership operation. This 1% shows on the dealer statement the following month.

And it is called DEALER holdback, not consumer hold back. Dealers don't have to disclose or share if they dont want to. However, most dealers are willing to give up the 2% (on '08 pilots, odysseys and ridgelines) to make a fair deal for both the consumer and the dealer. But the 1% - thats how they pay commision and floorplan.

What's a good price? by jthammon

We are looking to purchase a new Honda Odyssey EX-L RES in a few weeks (around 14 July). We have a quote for 30,909 from two dealers (this is without tax, title, doc fee, etc). Is this a good price? My husband and I are not very good at negotiating. Thanks!

30,909 seems quite high. Where I am (FL) they are going for under 29,000. Good luck.

I think we have a salesman in this forum.

Anyways, people are here to make informed decisions. It's up to the dealer to sell or not sell to make their quota. If a salesman asked me how much profit that I want the dealer to make I would answer them honestly "nothing" so don't ask. That's my 2 cents.
