I am looking at the Odyssey EX-L with RES. I am getting price quotes at $29,500 plus tax (6%) and doc fees of $99. Should I keep trying to get a better price or is this as good as I will get?

LX Price Paid: 1700 below invoice and 2.9% by ltbsolomon

Here's the short story.

  • Visited local dealer and was told MSRP (lol) and then "2 or 3 hundred over invoice" of 24,063 (includes destination charge but no mention of the $400 processing fee).

  • Filled out online form on 5 further dealers up to 70 minutes away. Only one internet sales rep responded with $23,266 + $200 processing fee. Visited that day and left (I don't make decisions under pressure)

  • Called local sales rep the next morning asking for their best offer, but told them I already had an offer 600 under invoice, refused to pay any processing fee, and wouldn't come unless they could beat price by 200. Asked for an OTD price. They refused to give a price but did promise to beat the price. I told them I'd think about it.

  • Called internet dealer and told them I'd drive and buy today for 1000 under invoice with no processing fee (I knew about the 1000 marketing incentive they had thanks too Edmunds). They said come in, I gave them some basic info so they could start filling out the paperwork, and I got into the car and started driving.

  • Halfway there, I prayed that God would show me if this wasn't a good decision. Less than 30 seconds later, the local dealer calls and asks where they had gone wrong. I told them that not being honest with a price made me feel like I wasn't in control and that I wanted to deal with someone who I could trust. They responded that they didn't want to give a number because then I could keep shopping. I told them that I was already driving to the other dealer and would need an incentive to turn around. They said they'd be willing to go down 1700 under invoice with no processing fee. I said I needed to check with my wife (the truth).

  • I call the internet dealer (who has already run my credit report, filled the car with gas, and cleaned it by now) and tell him that his price had just been beaten by $800. He was shocked (they always pretend to be, right?) but finally grumbled that he would match it. I may have been able to get a little more at this point, but I'm not the kind of person to lie or blatantly haggle, but they were also throwing in the weather guard package (listed $400) so I continued driving and called the local dealer back and thanked her for her time. If I wasn't moving soon I may have turned around because of the local advantages (free inspections) but since I'm moving in a few months I wanted to do business with the guy who had done the most work and who had been the most honest.

  •
Anyway, I walked out with an OTD price of 23077, including taxes, title, and tags, and took advantage of the 2.9% financing. The price without the TTT was $22100 + $200 processing fee. Thats over $1700 below invoice.

    Morals of the story:
  • Invoice price obviously doesn't mean anything. Neither does the processing fee.

  • Edmunds price can be high (my price was $1500 below TMV)

  • Don't accept a "we'll beat that offer' offer, because your negotiation control ends.

  • Pray (for those of you that believe it helps)...

  • Let a dealer know you're driving to their competitor and need a strong reason to turn around.

  •
I don't know if I got the best deal I could have, but I think I got a great deal.

    2007 vs. 2008 by jasonre

I am looking at an Odyssey, EX-L w/NAV and RES. The dealer has one 2007 model still left with an starting offer of $30,500 before taxes. The TMV of the 2008 model (according to the dealer, they were very few changes) is just over $34k. First, is the $3,500 worth it to get the 2008 model? Second, is the TMV a good price before taxes (which vary across the country)? My philosophy has been to buy cars as dealers are clearing out the prior year models, but I'm curious to hear other opinions on this. FWIW, I am in Colorado.
