Excellent give and take on this thread today. I just wanted to add that I was informed by my salesman that they were manufacturing awd le in #4 package only and that they track allotments by region. I put down $500 and did not test drive vehicle as the dealership had none and expected very little "on the lot availability" for 6 months.

My wife and I are both long term Honda owners (Accords) and love the vehicles. We rejected 2003 Odyssey as we agreed with one rating agency's report that the ride was a little firm at lower speeds and my wife felt turning was somewhat cumbersome. It also irritates me that Honda has refused to put stability control as an option in either Ody or the Pilot.(and no awd option on the Ody). I could not find out whether Honda will add awd and stability control for 2004 Ody. When Americans find out how important the stability control saftey feature is, (particularly in higher center of gravity vehicles), those vehicles without it will suffer a loss of demand. According to the Chicago Tribune, 2 out of 3 European vehicles have this feature already. Also 2nd and 3rd row side curtain head protection air bags were a great selling point for me as this vehicle's number one priority is to protect my family. I also count the run flat tires as a net positive despite increased expense. If you've ever had a flat in a gang infested neighborhood or during a blizzard or along busy I-80 (I've experienced all three) you would very much want the option of being able to drive on a flat for 100 miles.

We did drive the neighbor's somewhat smaller 2002 Sienna and loved it. I drove 40 miles to deal with same salesman who sold my neighbor his Sienna, and he indicated that if I did not like the new 2004 Sienna better he would refund my down payment. Apparrently with their waiting list a vehicle from a "busted sale" only takes a matter of hours to fill. I don't mind Toyota making a handsome but honest profit on a splendid vehicle, but I am counting on them to be fair om my trade in. I ordered our vehicle on August 22nd and am looking at 6 to 8 weeks, 10 at the outside if I am remembering the conversation with salesman accurately. I hope this information helps someone as Edmund's service herein really helped us find (we think) the vehicle that was right for us. I will keep the thread informed as new information developes.

Call to register a complaint by meijer

Anyone who is feed up with the confussion of buying a Sienna should call Toyota's Customer Service number and register a complaint. I have called many times to find out what the "Truth" really is -- every dealer has a different story. I noted my dislike that package #7 (BW) was not available in my region in the beginning and is almost impossible to get now. I have found a varying degree of knowledge among the service reps too. I recently called to verify that pkg #7 was now available in my region (something a larger dealer told me but others denied). I was told by one rep that only the dealer would know that so I called back and had another rep put me on hold to check and and he verified that I could get one.

There is no site where we can find out what is being built or is available in our different regions. I have found that some dealerships do know a lot more than others and have a better grasp on the allocation game. According to Toyota's customer service center, the dealership has to ask for the specific van you are ordering and most likely will get it in if you have left a deposit - they are filling deposit allocation requests first, but if they are out of a certain vehicle, they will sub. I have been told numerous times that they do not build vehicles to order -- they build vehicles and see if they match an order (which certainly does not seem to be the case when people are getting VIN numbers??)

Regarding option package #1 requirement -- yes, you do have to have at least package #1 on a vehicle. Doesn't seem much like an option to me either, but that is the way it goes.

I have my order in with Toyota City in Mamaroneck NY. I bought my 4runner there a few years ago and they were great. I still have no complaints other then I can't get a approximate date. All the dealers I talked to said #18 wasn't a option(this was in July). This dealer said they may be able to pull it out when the van hits Jersey and have it installed there and priced as a factory option..

It is Toyota of Wellesley. It is not far away from your area. The MSRP for the LE, 7-seater with LE package #7 is $27800. They initial quoted $26900 (with 2 1/2 to 3 months wait) without negotiate. I have been dealing with Expressway Toyota with $1000 off MSRP but they back out the deal when the production was on halt. And most dealers insist MSRP and some offer only $500 off.

I have been offered $1,300 below invoice by Jerry's Toyota in Maryland. They claim the can deliver in 8-10 weeks. When I mentioned this deal to another dealer he told me there is no way I can get it sooner than 6 months and that they would ask for a non refundable deposit on a non existent vehicle I am looking for and XLE with option package #1. has anybody done business with Jerry's toyota.

sienna wait by ncflyer

Just be prepared for a long wait everybody, I put down deposit for my Sienna in Cleveland area, early June, and am still waiting, XLE with the works, except Nav. Dealers quoting 6 months are probably the most realistic at this point! The production problems in August really slowed things down. Dealer told me I'm a lock for next allocation, so at best maybe I'm a month away. So, it's a long wait, but I'm glad Toyota has such high standards for their vehicles, if it were a VW, it would take years of consumer outrage for them to fix the problem!! I figure to get the vehicle I want, it's worth a few months, though it did tick me off that I just had to spend $200 to fix the vehicle I'm trading in.

dvd player in the Sienna by nusiennalvr

We really wanted the dvd put into our Sienna, even if it was put in at the dealership once it came in. However, our salesman, who was extremely helpful, assured me that they weren't coming in that way, and that to pay the dealership to put it in was silly. Especially since we were leasing-we were going to pay an extra 2k for something we were going to turn in in 4 years. So, we actually went to Best Buy and found a portable one with a 10 inch screen and detachable speakers with 2 cordless headphones, for $799.(an Audiovox) And, we can actually take it with us when we vacation into the hotel, etc. It has the straps that hook on in between the seats, and has a bigger screen than they offered installed. It was a good compromise as I have my Sienna XLE,taken from incoming inventory, love it, and have the dvd to keep my 3 kids somewhat quiet!!Just a thought for some of you looking for that option.

I think if a dealer asks for a non-refundable deposit, you should ask them to reconsider. It's not like you're special ordering some unique ride that no one else in the country will want if you back out when it arrives.

I suppose a non-refundable deposit does discourage people from putting up deposits with several dealers.

Toyota has high standards, but ANY of the auto manufacturers would have rushed to fix this problem. When fuel leaks in a crash test, particularly in a popular family segment like minivans, any car company out there pulls out all of the stops to get it fixed.

I'm planning to buy a Sienna soon, so I'm not out to insult anyone here, but it amazes me that so many people spin a Toyota safety issue into a positive. If this were an incident involving a GM or Ford vehicle there would be dozens of messages on this board bashing them for their incompetence and calling it a dangerous design flaw.
