I have been looking at 2001 Silhouette GLS and Premier vans in black with chrome wheels and two-tone leather and they look really nice for a minivan. Previously I had a 1997 Grand Voyager that was my first van and it was a great first experiance. Then, back in October 2000 I traded that van in for a 2000 Chrysler 300M. It used to be nice but now it creaks, squeaks, and rattles and drives me nuts and I have been missing the space and utility of a van. The Oldsmobile deals are great and I would like to get rid of my car and do not want another Chrysler.

I have heard that Venture/Montana/Silhouette build quality was spotty with a lot of squeaks and rattles. Is this true? The Silhouette seems very nice but these annoyances are the last things I need. Any advice?

#231 of 1308 Gotta a 99 GLS by jackjt

I have a 99 Silo, GLS with about 22K on it. It has really been quite good and still is tight. I have had some problem with windshield wind nosie, but it should be fixable and is not that annoying. I'd buy another----! Good Luck.

Would be interested in hearing what kind of lease costs anyone has obtained on a GL, especially with the "customer cash" of $2-3,000 that supposedly is available. If agreeable, please also provide how large a initial payment was made, etc. and in general, all the details of the lease. My guess is that since this car line is on its way to "auto heaven", leasing is the way to go because of significant discounts and the fact that I won't have to worry about resale.

#233 of 1308 2000 silhouette water leak by chrisr3

I have a 2000 gas, been back to the dealer 5 times for a persistent rear water leak in the tire jack panel. the dealer has made several attempts to solve the problem but it has'nt fixed the problem. last trip to the dealer they drilled a hole thou the bottom of the panel for drainage without telling me. it still fills with water and now living in the chic ago area its filled with salt water. I also have power steering problems. hard to parallel park and steering is tight in cold weather. I can also smell belt burning when the steering is acting up. dealer has looked at this twice and insists there is no problem. I am trying to get a new van under the state lemon law act. anybody out there gone this route!

I own a Silo with the only problem being a windshield noise. No leaks or power steering problems. As I said I don't have the problems, but I remember a few posts back someone mentioning the rear water leak. Check the old posts.

#235 of 1308 Extended crank by hark3

Mar 12, 2001 (7:28 pm)

I have a 2000 Silhouette, and I love it. It currently has 9200 miles and has been trouble free. One concern of mine is that about every 5th time I start it it will have an extended crank. On the other occasions, it will start immediately. The extended crank will last for about 2-3 seconds and it will sound almost like a sputter when it starts. It always starts, though. The dealer said that the 3.4 engine has a sensor on the crankshaft or camshaft(I forget which) that must be lined up properly or it has to make a complete revolution before starting. He says that nothing can be done. My brothers' Venture and Montana don't do this. Am I being misled?

Anyone having trouble with intermitten locking of the power door locks. Keeps trying to lock while driving. Also locks itself when you get out of car. Doesn't happen all the time. Didn't happen for the service dept. Also, remotes for opening doors have to be closer to car (15 feet) to work.
My 1998 had more distance with the remote.

This problem has also been posted on Venture site on and off.It is thought that water comes in around the rubber boots under the back hatch on the top frame of the body.

As a precaution I got some clear sealant, lifted the boot rim and sealed it that way. So far stays dry. Sometime ago someone posted that 2001 have drainage holes.

#238 of 1308 Cranking by jackjt

I have a 99 Silo and have experienced some longer "cranks", but nothing in the 3 sec. range and not that often.

I'd double check with some other dealer or GM.

#239 of 1308 Re: Post 198 - Towing Package by hardesty

The easiest way to tell if the van has the towing package is to look for the oil cooler between the oil filter and the engine. This is a small water jacket that uses engine coolant to cool the oil. It has small water lines running to it. Not all vans with load leveling suspension have the towing package.
