Is it worth the $$$ for the updated dvd? by claim5

I have an 07 EX-L w/navi and the only place it's been confused is about 150 miles north of St. Paul, MN. It didn't recognize a couple of the secondary roads, wanting to take me miles out of the way to get where I wanted to go. Luckily I had a map (remember those?) otherwise would have tacked on an hour or so extra driving time.

Other than Minnesota, it's been absolutely reliable all the way from Chicago down to the Keys, back up through the east coast states, across Canada from Niagra Falls and out to rural Kansas. Maybe I should just be happy that mine works (for the most part). Honda should have plugged it into the engine sensors to do mpg, though. That was the only disappointment on my EX-L.

Every year when the new DVD hits, I stumble out to the dealer to check out an Ody with the new version. It has improvements, but I still find a lot of 5-10 year old roads missing....as well as tons of POI's that my $200 Garmin has. I've never been able to justify the cost for the DVD. It works pretty good, but I always have a map and even my Garmin on backup when going into unknown areas. Seems like a better plan than spending the money on their "updated" DVD. The Ody NAV works pretty good most of the time though, particularly when you have a good idea of where you're going.

I purchased the Honda over the Toyota primarily because of the navigation system! Can you believe that in a Toyota you can not input while driving above 10 miles per hour? My wife would not be able to do her job as navigator. A recent review in PC Magazine shows that in-car system require fewer repairs than the others.
There have not been any new posts in a few weeks, and many negative posts. In the 3 months I have been playing with the Honda Navigation, I have read the manual cover to cover. So, I would like to hear some more tips about how to get the most out of the system that we are stuck with.
I am a Magellan owner, sorry Garmin users, and love my Magellan. My Magellan always takes a long time to acquire satellites, and I have had to return it for replacement during the warranty. But, I love it, the database is great! The database in the Honda leaves a lot to be desired. And interestingly both get their information from Navteq! Go figure.
So, I hope to generate some more discussion here, and see how we can help each other.

I've mainly started using my blackberry for POI searches and then just plug in the address to the Ody NAV. Works pretty good...but again I still usually glance at a map before relying on any of the GPS units for longer trips. They all do some goofy things. Not sure if you've tried this tip...but you can "fly" ahead/around your route using the pointer and see the route or other roads you might be interested in.

I own the 2009 Honda Accord with Nav system. Fortunately the Nav system is recessed into the dash which leaves a shelf area in front of it that is just perfect to hold my TomTom.

The Honda Nav system cannot find my home which has been here for 60 years. The TomTom cost about $600 3-4 years ago and is much better than the Honda system.

What a mistake the Honda purchase was.

I've heard there's an aftermarket Alpine system that's very close to the Ody system in terms of integration/looks (the Honda NAV is built by Alpine). I've seen quotes of around $1,500 for that one. I recall someone on another site pricing all the parts, wiring harnesses, etc. to do the OEM install at somewhere around $4,000 (before labor if you can't do it yourself). Honda/dealers don't sell the factory nav as an add-on. But yes, anything is possible with deep enough pockets.
