Most car systems don't perform as well as the small portable systems when it comes to accurate navigation - not a surprise, given that fitting a function within a larger vehicle (and one made by a third party most of the time) will not compare to a primary, stand alone function made by a company that specializes in only that function. It's why car stereos usually don't sound as good as home theatre systems. It's why the GPS on my smart phone isn't as fast as my Garmin. That's how it goes. Now that I have said that, I fully expect my 'O5 Ody to come apart as soon as I back out of the garage.

Replying to: denver5357 (Jan 09, 2009 2:00 pm) None of which can you get without the NAV, so you still have to blow 2g's. I really like the big screen for the backukp camera and navigating XM radio. Voice commands are useless to me. The sad part is, as much as I hate this NAV I would probably still buy it again just because I'm a sucker. While the POI's database is horrible and some mapping/roads are goofy, it still works a decent amount of the time. And the Garmin I keep in my truck works/runs nearly flawless comparatively speaking, but the lack of intergration annoys as well. Yes, other systems are as bad or worse. The system in my wife's GX470 is far worse than the Honda system. But she never uses it for ah-hem....lack of technical "training". She has a Garmin stuck to the windshield while her very expensive factory nav screen sits there dark. The system I had in a previous Audi was actually pretty good in terms of POI's and mapping, but the overall functionality wasn't as good as Honda. That being said, if I was having some sort of operation problem as some folks are having (map is in wrong place, system hangs, etc) I would be taking Honda to task on it. I can live with a crappy built system more so than one that won't even work properly within its crappy capacity

| I just bought a 2002 Honday Odyssey. So far I am very happy with it. Its navigation system is working great but needs updating with latest maps. Does anyone know how I can get the GPS system updated with the latest software? | |

I see that many newer models have experienced problems with their updated navigator. Is there anyone out there who has replaced theirs on a 2001 and if so, what have your results been? Thank you. |

| I own a 2007 Odyssey EX-L with dvd and navigation. Well from the very beginning the navigation sucked. It does "ok" with long distance directions. But since I'm not a traveling salesman, a lot of good that does me. Good luck finding points of interest (POI). I thought updating the disc would alleviate the problems. NOT!!!!! I received my new disc ver. 4.73A about 2 weeks ago! Nothing has changed!!!!! I live in a major city in NC, and if I put in Walmart, it will give me one in Massachusetts or Tennessee! For some reason these two states seem to be really popular with my GPS system. I mean there are like 5 Walmart stores within a 20 mile radius!! I put in Dillards Department store, and it gave one in a city 200 miles away! The other day, I put in TJ Maxx, and it gave me one in Virginia. I am so sick of it. I have been reading all these posts, and glad to know that I am not alone, but am angry to know that Honda/Alpine is not doing anything to fix this mess. If you are thinking about getting a new disc, save your money. They are no different!!! I am going to send mine back for a refund. We all need to complain to Honda. They cannot just sit back and do nothing. There needs to be a recall. Built in navigation does not come cheap. Has anyone heard anything as of late, or gotten any good contact information for either Alpine or Honda? I would appreciate it! | |

Replying to: antaggie (Jan 26, 2009 6:55 am) My nav system sucks to high heaven and the lowest hades, and Honda nor Alpine will willingly address the issue so I am going to let my state's lemon law handle it when the extended warranty expires! Basically, that's three unresolved visits to any dealer for the same problem and Honda has to take back the vehicle. I am glad to hear that a disc update does not solve the problem, at least!! I will not spend the money based on your comments. Honda just says everything is fine from the dealer all the way to the national office in California. Alpine does not even answer letters or phone messages. Part of the so-called problem is I live in a rural area and Honda says the maps have not been updated. That sucks because the Lewis & Clark Expedition mapped not only Kentucky but Ohio and Missouri and Indiana 200 years ago or so, and by now, Honda and Alpine should have gotten on board. I will give the system this much -- after I go somewhere and enter that location into the unit, things are basically ok. You're just going to have to figure out how to get there first so you can tell Honda where you want to go. I guess if I owned Alpine or Honda stock, I wouldn't complain. Or if I had so much money that it did not matter, I also probably wouldn't complain. As it is, I paid over $2,200 for something that is unreliable, doesn't work correctly, but sure does make a nice-loking cover or front piece for the CD player. Good luck! I wish you well. |

Replying to: antaggie (Jan 26, 2009 6:55 am) It sounds like your biggest complaint is the way it searches for POI's. I had problems with this at first as well and it turns out, it's operator error. The system is not intuitive though, which is why you're getting stores 200 miles away. This "problem" has to do with the order in which you select different menus. Try this from the main nav menu: search places, shopping, sort by distance to travel or city vacinity, then input name. If you just search by name it pulls "Dillards" out of its arse. Another problem can be with how the names are in the system. A lot of times I'll do a city vicinity search and just type in the first letter and then hit list. You'll have to scroll through everything in that category that starts with a that letter. What's really sad is that of the OEM systems I've owned, this one is actually the best. The system in my wife's Lexus is horrible even for my technical brain. She refuses to use it and has a Garmin mounted to the windshield. The Lexus also has a lot of limitations to features when the vehicle is in motion.
