Sorry I could not reply sooner. Hope nothing went south on you.

Anyway, last year I had two of my pullies bearings go out. When they did they took out the belt and some wiring. Pull the belt off and manually feel all the pullies, and when I say all I do mean all. Give them a turn and wiggle them up and down to see if they have any play. The pullies are all generally easy to change.

Also.....check your bottom crank pully and your alternator. The crank pully is made up of two metal parts bound together with a rubber piece between them. The rubber gets hard over time and the two metal parts start to separate. If they look misalligned at all you will do yourself a favor by changing it. Mine luckly just ate up a belt first. I have heard of the pully coming apart and really doing some damage to the van. You will need to go through the right side wheel well to change it.

I have not changed the alternator yet. So I don't know what that entails yet.

Dude,

Man I sure hope you can help me out with this one. My 2001 Venture has started making a funny squealing sound when I am driving and I need to give it some gas to get up a hill or anytime it has to downshift and rev up a bit. Any suggestions on what this could be? I have just changed the belt and tensioner and still a loud squealing noise when it revs up. Any ideas? Could it be another pulley or water pump?

regards,

Stephen

Would a bad pulley cause this squeeling? I just changed the belt and tensioner and no better.

I think you're on the right track. If you're around 100K miles your water pump is likely the culprit as they usually don't last too much longer than that. If you look at the water pump closely you might see a tiny bit of coolant starting to work its way out - that's indicative that the pump is shot.

Take the belt off and try to turn all of the pulleys by hand. Except for the crankshaft (obviously), they should all be pretty easy to turn by hand. You might find the problem that way.

Another way to check the water pump while the belt is off is to grab the pulley and try to move it in and out or up and down. If there's any play in it, the bearing is shot and the pump is due for replacement.

I don't own our Venture any more so I can't go outside and look but there's likely an idler pulley in addition to the tensioner pulley so be sure to check that too.

You didn't mention having the AC or defroster on so we won't talk about the compressor for now.

Good Luck - write back and let us know how you made out....

Thanks for the advice, I will check in the next few minutes, my air conditioning has not worked in about a year, would this have anything to do with it?

I had my idler pully and my tension pulley go out! So check them all!

Don't forget to check the alternator while your at it.

I can't visually see any water after a 30 minute drive but things look a little rusted. Is this the only indication that it is shot? Do you think the squeeling could be coming from anything else?

squealing: If it is doing it while sitting idle in your driveway it is a bearing going out on one component on the serpenntine belt.

I have also replace the power stearing pump.

My suggestion to you would be to remove the belt, pull off the pullies one by one and feel with you fingers how easy/hard it is to turn. It should turn fairly easy with no (NO) bumpy feeling at all.

a drastic suggestion: check your parts place for returns! you can always take the approach of changing things out till you find the problem!

Is it hard to change the water pump? Anything I should know before starting? What about this idler arm, what could that cause?
