I have just finished reading through the various postings in all the topics related to my 2003 Montana and I think that the "GM's triplets Venture, Silhouette, and Montana" topic should be made accessible from the "Pontiac Montana" Forum and this topic should be changed to "Read Only". This topic, so far, is really just a duplication, and since the vehicle is discontinued, there is no likelihood that "future" products might be require a separate topic. But do make the "triplets" topic available from the "Pontiac Montana" forum first, because there is enough difference between Pontiac and Chev overall. For example, I might be interested in following the Vibe, and not that interested in the HHR.

Replaced alternator in 2000 montana, now it won't turn over. by sussexcofarmer

Hi all, I just fininshing replacing the alternator in my 2000 montana and it won't turn over. I have power to the vehicle...dash, chimes, lights, you name it. But when I turn the key it just does nothing, no sound, no attempt to turn over, nada. Could I have blown a fuse or relay somewhere in the ignition? Are there security codes that are locking me out of the ignition? Can anyone help me? I was forced to replace it myself due to economics and you have no idea how defeated i felt after going through that whole ordeal just to hear nothing. I appreciate any help or advise you can give.

I am having a similar problem. In fact, the symptoms are exactly the same. The difference is that what brought on my problem is that I got a new key from Wal Mart. This happens when I try to use the new key. My guess was that it was a security issue. Your problem stacks up as another piece of evidence to that effect.

That is to say that I would guess that your problem is tied to the same security feature that is giving me problems.

I have a 97 Montana with 100000+ miles. I just got it out of the shop last week and noticed it will start to sputter and shake a little for a few seconds then it will be fine. It happens any time at any temperature at any speed.

The head gasket, water pump, thermostat, starter and flywheel were all replaced last month.

hello,
 im in the same boat...
i just replaced the water pump my self...
put it all back together went to start it and it wont turn over.. the instrument panel come up like you said chimes ect but it wont turn over, when i stop trying to crank it over the security light does come on, also i get nothing from the radio it ejects the CD light up but it wont play anything , i do have the compustar system in it. im really thing it is something with the security, it is almost midnight and i have been hitting my head for 3h..

also when i remove the key after the security light cam on some of the dash lights stayed on for about 3 seconds then turned off. i hear the fuel pump priming and get all the noises but i don't know what to do it is dead in my father in law's garage.
 any thoughts would be great!!

Thanks for the instructions. Removing the blower motor is a good tip. Only one issue - the hex head screws on my 2001 Montana were 8mm, not 6mm.

Purchased 3 years old Montana 2000 base model in 2003
1. Head casket replaced right after the purchase ( likely to me under warranty )
2. Terrible steering wheel vibration – replaced original tires with Michelin destiny – problem was solved forever.
3. Windshield wipers parks vertically – not covered with extended warranty ( most expensive one) – wanted to replace whole assembly for 200$ without work – fixed in some garage for 20$. After 1 year came back.
4. Fuel cage indicator started to show full tank all the time – not covered with extended warranty and very expensive to fix. I just waited and it eventually started to work … no more problems so far
5. Blown cabin fan resistor. Purchased one for 50$ and replaced in a friendly garage for 20$
6. Started to rust in few places 2 years ago. Still looks ok.

Summary:
Generally speaking I like my Montana. This is my wife’s car and she likes it even more. Very comfortable with hauling my family to a big distance. Extremely nice and comfortable ride. I don’t’ feel that this car is not reliable. My car has a 80K and most of them very heavy traffic city miles.
Again … windshield wipers annoyingly parked in the wrong position. 200$ + work to replace them? I don’t know.
I was looking for not expensive car and bought a base model that still has ABS and power window.
